When you need care

Health care is a big part of your total rewards, and we want to help you get the most out of it. Learn about the excellent coverage you receive from Adobe’s Medical, Dental and Vision plans.

Medical

To supplement your national health insurance, Adobe offers private medical insurance through Bupa to help manage your health care needs. The purpose of this insurance is to provide access to the private healthcare sector, which works alongside the National Health Service (NHS) and offers easy access to specialists and hospital beds. See the Bupa Select Plan Summary [PDF] for more details.

Eligibility

The scheme is open to all regular employees, Adobe paid temps and interns. Adobe funds the premium for employees, their partners and unmarried dependents through the renewal date following their 24th birthday. (Note: It is not possible to cover siblings, parents or other members of the extended family).

Premium Tax Treatment

The annual premiums paid by Adobe per member differ based on the following coverage levels:

Medical Rates for 1 April 2017 – 31 March 2018:

Type of CoverageCost per Year
Employee Only£574.80
Employee + Partner£1,149.59
Employee + Child(ren) or Single Parent£862.20
Family£1,436.99

Employees are not liable to tax on any costs reclaimed under the Private Medical Insurance scheme, however there is a liability to tax as a “Benefit in Kind” on the value of the premiums that Adobe pays on its employee’s behalf. Subscription to the scheme will be stated on employees P11D Return and will be subject to UK Income Tax. Contact payroll@adobe.com for further tax-related questions.

Additionally, all ensured are subject to an excess of 100£ per person per plan year. This applies to each person included on your plan, and will be deducted by Bupa from the first invoice they pay (and the next invoice if any excess still remains). You will then need to pay the excess amount to the relevant medical professional, hospital or other facility.

Claim Process

  • Visit your General Practitioner (GP). If you need to see a medical professional using your health insurance scheme, you are normally required to see your GP first.
  • Ask for a referral letter. If you have a condition for which a GP referral to a consultant or healthcare professional is required, you must ask your GP for an ‘Open Referral letter’ to ensure that your treatment is covered. Alternatively, you can give your GP the simple Open Referral form
  • Call your Bupa helpline 0345 609 0444 before arranging consultation or receiving treatment. As soon as you have seen your GP, call Bupa so that they can discuss your options and explain which consultants and healthcare professionals are covered under your Bupa membership.
  • Get a pre-authorisation number. When you have confirmed that your treatment is covered, Bupa will discuss your claim with you and give you a ‘pre-authorisation’ number. You can then contact your consultant or healthcare professional to arrange an appointment.
Please refer to the Claiming section (page 6) in the Summary Plan Document [PDF] for more details.

Claims process

When visiting the dentist, the employee should pay for treatment out of pocket, but should also take a claim form in order for the dental treatment details to be completed by the dental practitioner. Once completed, the form should be submitted with original receipts to BUPA within 30 days of the start of treatment. Reimbursement, in accordance with BUPA’s benefit schedule, is usually made via cheque to the employee within a few days. The claim form can be downloaded on the BUPA website.

It is the responsibility of the employee to ensure that the treatment is covered under the plan. If in doubt, you should contact the BUPA Customer Care department, which is open from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday. The telephone number is 0800 237 777 or visit the BUPA website.

Members can use the Plan as necessary without any referral to BUPA, except if a course of treatment is expected to exceed £500. If this is the case, you should contact BUPA prior to the treatment commencing (assuming that the treatment is not in the case of an accident or emergency where pre-authorization is not practical).

Restrictions

Please note that the insurer places a restriction on “Dependents”. A dependent refers to children up to the age of 24 for whom the employee has responsibility only. It is not possible to cover siblings, parents or other members of the extended family.

Note: No cash payment will be made in lieu of the benefit.
