Medical coverage

The CDC has provided vaccination FAQs so you can stay informed on COVID-19 vaccine options and common questions. COVID-19 vaccinations are widely available at pharmacies, doctors’ offices and other sites. To find COVID-19 vaccine locations near you, contact your health care provider or pharmacy or search The cost of COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots is covered in full for Aetna and Kaiser members.

If a doctor determines you should be tested for COVID-19, the cost of the diagnostic test and doctor visit will be covered in full for Aetna and Kaiser members. The medical plans do not cover testing for employment, school, travel, or recreational purposes.

Effective January 15, 2022, the FDA approved rapid antigen home tests (up to 8 OTC tests per member per 30 days) will be covered for members of the Aetna and Kaiser Permanente medical plans. To be covered, tests must be used to diagnose a potential COVID-19 infection (e.g., if you have symptoms or think you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19). Starting February 17, 2022, there are new ways to get the home tests. Aetna members can pick up over-the-counter (OTC) tests with $0 up-front cost at CVS Pharmacy. Through this option, there are no upfront costs to you because the claim is processed in real-time under your pharmacy benefit. Kaiser members can visit their Kaiser pharmacy to pick up tests as supply allows or pick up at no cost from participating retail pharmacies, such as Walmart and Rite Aid. Members show their medical plan ID card at the pharmacy counter.  If you paid out of pocket for eligible OTC tests, you can still get reimbursed by your medical plan up to the lesser of the actual price or $12 per test. For reimbursement, you will need to submit information about the test purchased and proof of payment that shows the name of test, store name, date of purchase, and purchase price.

Aetna members, log into your  Aetna member website (SSO) for additional details and to submit reimbursement claims. Kaiser members go to Kaiser’s testing page for submission details for your region. If any questions, call the members services phone number on your medical ID card.

You may also visit to request free rapid antigen home tests, without shipping fees, from the federal government and to learn about other testing resources.

Care and treatment related to a COVID-19 diagnosis is covered under your normal Aetna or Kaiser plan design (i.e., subject to deductible, coinsurance, copays, and out-of-pocket maximums).

Aetna members: Call your primary care physician, or log in to the Aetna website (SSO) or Aetna app to find a network provider, urgent care, hospital, ER, or lab. You can also schedule a video visit with a doctor through at any time, seven days a week.

Kaiser members: Call the advice number on your Kaiser membership card to discuss the most appropriate care option or to schedule a telephone or video appointment with your doctor where available.
